Lago Titicaca

The Lake of Titicaca, in Spanish Lago Titicaca, is the largest lake of South America. It covers an area of 8.340 km² with an avarage depth of 140-180 meters. It is positioned between Peru and Bolivia on an incredible height of 3.812 meters above sea level, which makes it the highest navigable lake from all over the world.

There are 41 islands on the lake, among these are several inhabitat by people since ancient times. The most famous are the floating Uros Islands, Taquile and Amantani. We offer 2 tours to discover this unique lake. On the 1 day tour get the chance to visit the floating islands and Taquile, and the people who live there. In the 2 day tour, besides these 2, you also visit Amantani. On this island, you can do a home-stay at a local family and see how they eat, work and live on the lake.

The Puno region can experience “all seasons in one day” therefore it´s wise to take a warm hat and gloves, as well as a hat and sunglasses. It is recommended to be in Puno 1 day before the start of your trip due to the high altitude (3.800 meters). Take a look at the FAQ page for more information about altitude sickness.

In the morning, around 07:00, we pick you up from your hotel to head to the port of Puno. From here, we take a motor boat and travel to one of the Uros islands. The Uru people made the islands themselves using bundles of reed stacked up to one each other and eventually being strong enough to carry the people and their houses. The islands reach up to 20 meters in length!

After visiting the floating islands and meeting the traditional way of living of the Uru people we continue and take a 2 hour boat trip to reach Taquile Island.
